In response to the last post, a good buddy of mine directed me to this and figured it was worth sharing (compliments of lolcats.com):

you’d think he was a goner but…

We give the disciples such a hard time.

I mean, forget the fact that they gave up everything on the spot to follow this man around who claimed not only to be the son of God, but to be God himself. Not only is that pretty presumptuous, it’s down right confusing at times even “2000 years later.” But just take Peter in the boat for example: Here’s a simple guy who happens to be minding his own business when he sees this guy he’s been following around out acting like one of those crazy lizards that can run across the water. And when he sees it’s Jesus, he gets out of the boat to get in on this sweet lizard action himself.

But is that the part we remember when we bring up this story to our hip, lizard-loving friends?

No.

What do we do? We talk about how he gets scared and falls into the water. We politely shake our heads, give a subtle chuckle, and extend “pity” to poor old Peter as we pat ourselves on the back in Sunday School for having 20/20 hindsight. But Peter had some balls, at least a few more than I do. (Don’t think about that too long….it was an illustration figure of speech.)

Don’t even get me started on Thomas.

But I admit I have a tendency to think the same kind of thing of the disciples during these few days where Jesus was in the tomb. You would think that after all they’d seen and experienced over the last few years would have resolved them into unquestioning believers. But remember what they’ve also seen: their teacher ripped to shreds, nailed (friggin’ NAILED!) to a couple of shabby beams and hung to eventually die…which he did. Most of us couldn’t even sit still through the Passion movie…how much more depressing would it have been in real life? Could you have handled it?

It’s times like these I feel closer to God because I realize I’m no different than the disciples. We give them so much crap for lacking faith in the face of dire situations that would bring the best of us today to our knees but in reality we’re no better, which to me is a comforting thought. The awesome thing is, we have a God who is bigger than our doubts, bigger than our weaknesses, bigger than death.

the Cat came back.

the Temple was rebuilt.

While his body may have been chillin’ in the tomb, his essence was out harnessing his lizard-powers and laying the smackdown on death….so that we may doubt, but eventually rest in confidence that outlasts the grave.

Walk on, Jesus Lizard, walk on.
