your mom goes to 9 o’clock! pt. II

7 04 2008

Whew.

Just got home from another long day. From work, to CR, to workin out over at LA Fitness in Lake Highlands, I am exhausted. Dinner is on the stove as I type and I’ve got the Memphis-Kansas game on in the living room (in HD sucka!). Sorry to leave you on a cliffhanger yesterday, I felt the post was getting too long and the day wasn’t even over by the time I finished writing. So, let’s pick up where we left off:

EXPLODED!

I was on Coit headed down the road to grab a quick lunch at Chipotle when all of a sudden I hear a shotgun go off and I almost lose control of my car. Thankfully, I was only going about 35 mph when it happened. I fought my car over to the shoulder and put my blinkers on. As I got out and walked around my car, my stomach was dropping lower and lower. I knew the tire would be gone, but I was really worried I had destroyed my rim. Thankfully, there was enough tire left to keep at least some of the weight off it.

Now, here was a dilemma. I have never in my 9 years of driving changed a tire or put on a donut.

Church had just let out from the 11am service, so I called my boss, Ryan up to see if he could drive over and help me out. I knew the general idea, but I wasn’t even sure I had a jack. Thankfully, Ryan has owned a couple Hondas and knew they all came with a jack and wrench set standard. While on the phone, he directed me to my trunk where upon which I discovered a previously unnoticed compartment cover that popped off to reveal the tools. Sweet.

By that time, a guy in my community group, Spencer, happened by and saw me and pulled over to give me a hand. Now, let me stop right here for a second.

Even though I’ve only been at Watermark for 19 months, I am already on my second community group. My first group had several really good guys in it. Very sharp guys. One worked at HBK (hedge fund, basically people who get paid to make rich people richer), one was a city prosecutor in family court, and another was looking to get into the energy trading company, namely oil. Again, these guys were great, but after 6 months or so, I began to fill very out of place. My attendance started slipping and I found myself looking for stuff at work to prevent me from having to go. Eventually I just told the guys I was gonna move on.

My new group is really still brand new and I haven’t had the chance to get to know the guys real well yet; but I have to admit, I had recently been worrying I was going to end up in the same place with them. I pushed this in God’s direction just last week. I didn’t want to end up in just another group that wasn’t really going anywhere.

So how awesome is it that Spencer was the one to find me? It was seriously one of those moments when you can feel God smirking at you.

So, we finally got the donut on and began lowering the wheel back to the pavement. All’s good right? It’s too bad the donut kept sinking lower and lower till it looked just as flat as my EXPLODED! tire. Thankfully, I got hold of Ryan again who told me we had an air compressor in the prop shop. I slowly maneuvered my car into a parking lot and leave with Spencer to go pick it up and bring it back to fill the donut. Once that was said and done, he followed me all the way to NTB down at 75 and Soutwestern, taking the service road the entire way because you don’t want to go faster than 50 on a donut, which ruled out the freeway.

We find out it’s going to be at least an hour to get it fixed up. (I went ahead and got a new wheel for the driver’s side as well.) This was another problem because it was 1:30 and Connecting Point, our membership class, started at 2:30. Spencer was going to a Stars game so he couldn’t wait around. You ready for this? He called his sister (who was also going to the game) to come pick him up at NTB and left me his car. How’s that for doing life with someone? Spencer also happens to be one of my volunteers, which makes this even more awesome. Thank you Spencer! Thank you God!

It ended up only being $150 for the tires and labor. Not too bad. But you might remember I dropped $900 just a few days earlier on my brakes. Ouch. The Matt from a few weeks ago would have explosively decompressed by now due to blood pressure. But God is doing an amazing work in me. I think I had a smile on my face the entire time. I got the biggest kick out of changing my first tire that I think I thoroughly enjoyed myself through the whole situation. Paying up hurt, but praise the Lord for giving me an opportunity to take ground in my walk with anger! Isaiah 26:3 baby!

I got back in plenty of time to run sound and graphics for Connecting Point. We had about 150 there, which is a little low, but it was still very special day because it was most likely the last time the infamous Cruise ship-Battleship video would be shown. If you’re from Watermark, you know the one. Yes, that one. The one the Arts staff mocks relentlessly. I really want to meet the guy who made it. I’m gonna get Eh, Steve!, our video guy (who’s Canadian), to put it on YouTube so that all of you can witness the gouda. From what I understand, Igniter Media is making us a new one as well as a commercial version that will be available on Igniter Videos Vol. 6 which is due out soon. It will be a sad decommission nonetheless.

RIP Cruise Ship/Battleship video. Your name will live in infamy. Your synthesizer and trumpet will echo in the hearts and nightmares of all who gazed upon your velveeta and lived to tell the tale.

It’s still only about 4pm by this point. Raise the Mark and Shoreline are still to come. I’ll wrap up the day tomorrow and give you some closing thoughts. Thanks for being faithful readers. In appreciation, here’s some Bode for you (it’s worth it to watch the whole thing):
