Sorry for the blog-fast the last few days.
Between Training Day (formerly Equipping Day) on Saturday, Service Day this morning and GroupLink this afternoon, I’ve not had much time for writing.
My last post was future-published on Thursday morning if I’m not mistaken. (Most of my posts are written days in advance and set to publish automatically as the week rolls on.) Thursday was a ride. I woke up and was heading into work when I realized I had completely forgotten about an event that I was supposed to set up for that started at 10a. I burned rubber to the office (I had planned on going in late) and threw it all together. They only started about 5-6 minutes late, but I really let the director of that event down. I’m not her favorite person at the moment, so I did some recon and found out she really likes A & M and Clay Aiken.
Let it be known that this will be the only mention of Clay Aiken for the duration of this blog.
So I found a bobblehead of his likeness on ebay. Apparently they are very rare. I ended up winning it for $5.99 and it will be shipped out tomorrow. Hopefully it’ll make the apology go more smoothly. But with my luck, she probably already has one.
Forgetting the event really got me down though. I was beating myself up over it all day and it wasn’t even the only bad thing to happen, but that’s another story for another day. It wasn’t until late that afternoon that things took a really positive turn.
I think I’ve said before that I read like it’s my spiritual gift. I also really enjoy writing and have been considering what life looks like for me post ministry. I’m not even sure that I’ll eventually leave full-time ministry, but it’s at the back of my mind. The Igniter Media guys also have a sister company (kinda, but not really) that produces COLLIDE magazine. Most of those guys go to Watermark, so I emailed Rob Thomas (no, not that Rob Thomas) to see if I could pick his brain over coffee. He obliged me on Thursday afternoon, so we met at the Starbucks at Abrams and Royal where I found out how much of a celebrity he is there.
Rob is the CEO of Igniter/Worship House Media/COLLIDE, so this was an opportunity I couldn’t pass up.
And, man did I soak it up.
I originally went in to see if I could have the opportunity to do some writing or something for COLLIDE for free. I just wanted to get some experience and COLLIDE is all about the world I work and live in every day. But after listening to Rob talk, my focus began to shift away from that towards what I could do with my blog. How amazing is it that would-be writers now have incredible, free publicity through the advent of blogging? With such a low initial investment, you can get yourself out there and have your stuff read so much more easily than 10 years ago. A well-written blog can possibly land you all sorts of opportunities as long as you’re committed.
The best blogs are specific. Every blog I read is about ministry in some way, shape, or form. I think I’m going to head in that same direction over the next few months. I was already working on getting web-hosted and changing the look and feel of the place, so I’m off to a good start. The name will change most likely. 3rd and long was just the name of my old blog in college.
I’m going to be doing some hard thinking about what this blog will be about in the future. I haven’t yet made up my mind on what I really love writing about. Let’s face it, you really need to enjoy a subject to write about it every day. In any case, you might notice some changes over the next few weeks as I explore this avenue revealed to me. I’m really excited.
Thanks, Rob. It’s so awesome to have your input.
